​Notification on forest fire prevention and protection measures

On 16 December 2024, the Ministry of Environment issued a notice to specialized units, sub-national administrations, and environmental departments, including natural protected area communities and all stakeholders, to implement eight measures.

According to the Environment and Natural Resources Code, Chapter 3, Article 849, negligence, carelessness, lack of precaution, or failure to comply with obligations that cause forest fires or fires in grassland areas is considered a Level 1 natural resource offense in protected natural areas, which is punishable by imprisonment from 1 month to 1 year and a fine of 10 riels to 100 million riels. Separately, according to Article 851, any person who intentionally causes forest fires or fires in grassland areas is considered to have committed a Level 3 natural resource offense in protected natural areas, which is punishable by imprisonment from 5 to 10 years.
